Match Review 2005/06
09/05/06 Ibis 5 Ambleside 4
The clubs final fixture of the season saw relegation threatened Ambleside travel to the hard & dusty but fairly flat United Utilities field,Chris Ellwood,Liam O'Callaghan,Mike Packham & John Greenop were missing,Pete Hetherington & Neil Wilson filling in on the bench. The game was started on the Kendal Celtic pitch due to a junior game on the Ibis field & it was Ambleside who were out of the blocks faster, taking the lead on 5 minutes,a long through ball beating the flat footed defence for an Ambleside forward to run in & score. After 10 minutes the game was switched back on to the Ibis field,at last Ibis began to dominate & for the rest of the half played some excellent football with good passing & movement but it took a penalty on 20 minutes to level the scores,Steve Longcake being tripped & James Todhunter doing the honours from the spot.Ibis took the lead shortly after when Stephen Knowles rose to a far post corner to head inside the post, this was soon followed by a third,Stephen Longcake's maizy run around the defender resulting in a low shot past the keeper. With 10 minutes in the half left Ibis scored a fourth,Stephen Knowles was left unmarked in the box to head home a left wing cross but with seconds to go in the half Ambleside pulled one back, slack defending at a long throw allowed an Ambleside player to poke home for a lifeline.Ibis began the second half confidently & looked to have sealed the game when once again Stephen Knowles was quickest to react on a cross to head home for his Hat-trick of headers.Neil Wilson & Pete Hetherington were both introduced but unfortunately the Ibis team began to switch off,Ambleside pulling two goals back both from poor defending which set up a nervy last 15 minutes in which they missed 2 or 3 good chances to equalise,Ibis thankfully holding on for the win.A mixed bag of good & bad, Ambleside needing the points more but Ibis showing good effort especially in the first half,Stephen Knowles standing out with his hat-trick,Neil Wilson doing well after settling into the game.
03/05/06 Ibis Res 3 Penrith Rangers Res 2
The hard bumpy pitch on the United Utilities field made good football dificult but both teams were to be congratulated for a hard fought entertaining game which Ibis were desperate to win to claim at least a promotion place if not the league title. The referee was making plenty of decisions, possibly not all correct,as Ibis pushed forward in the early stages, being rewarded on 15 minutes when a mix up in the Penrith defence allowed chris Ellwood to pick up a free ball & stroke home the openner.Penrith bounced back 5 minutes later,a ball to the back post letting a forward shoot across Chris Miller into the oposite corner.Ibis were still creating the better chances but it took another mix up in the Penrith defence to contribute to their second, this time Mark Carradus picking up the loose ball for an overhead kick into the open goal. With only a slender lead at half time Ibis new the game was not yet won,Penrith, with a lot of good young players were not for conceding,as the second half produced some good battling football.Steve Longcake,Gary Bowles & Pete Clives were all introduced for Ibis & on 70 minutes Ibis increased their lead,Bob Walsh's header hitting the post & rolling across the line,Steve Longcake's lunge beating the keeper to the ball to score. At last daylight between the teams but with 10 minutes to go Penrith got a lifeline,a good through ball let in a Penrith forward to slot past keeper, this set up a frantic end to the game with Penrith pressurising the Ibis defence but were unable to finish their chances,Ibis running out the game for a good win.Too early to say if promotion is a certainty but Ibis must now be favourites at least to go up,possibly as champions.
29/04/06 Carlton Res 3 Ibis Res 1
Ibis Reserves travelled to French fields Penrith for this top of the table clash,Ibis had strengthened slightly with Stephen Knowles & Chris Ellwood in the squad,Carlton appeared to have strengthened considerably from the 1st team.Ibis had the first chance within 2 minutes,Neil Hartley unable to take when put through, the game then evening out into a midfield battle both sides unable to make the breakthrough until on the half hour a cross from the left was headed against the Ibis crossbar the ball ricocheting back unluckily against John Greenop to roll into the net.Ibis pushed forward & were quickly rewarded 5 minutes later,Neil Hartley sent clean through to slot past the keeper but as the half time whistle dawned Carlton snatched the lead again when a Carlton forward rounded the Ibis defence to shoot across Andrew Armistead into the bottom corner.Slightly unlucky to be behind Ibis were rocked back early in the second half,Carlton, who were strong in the air throughout the game, were the more determined when a cross from the right was headed past the Ibis keeper to increase the lead.Ibis began to throw everything forward as Carlton began to play a holding game,Chris Ellwood was brought on up front,Stuart Dixon pushing into midfield, just James Mackereth & John Greenop at the back. With 20 minutes to go Ibis seemed to have grounds for a penalty when Tom Hayton appeared to have been pushed in the back when heading on goal, the referee however thought otherwise. In the final minutes Carlton survived two or three near misses but it wasn't Ibis day as the home team held on to bring them just one point behind with 2 games each to go.Despite the result a good effort from the Ibis players probably deserving something out of the game,Stuart dixon having a steady game when thrown forward.
25/04/06 Kendal Town Res 2 Ibis 3
Gary Taylor & Graham Carlos were still unavailable,Bob Walsh replacing Mark Carradus otherwise the same team that won at Sedbergh.Ibis began well against a lethargic Kendal Town & had the better of the exchanges in the first 15 minutes without threatening the Town goal but slowly Kendal began to assert themselves as Ibis were made to chase the ball. With half an hour gone kendal took the lead when a forward broke round the defence & hit a thunderous shot which cannoned in off Andrew Armistead.Injured James Todhunter was replaced by Ryan Ormrod & as the half drew to a close Ibis began to get to get back into the game & on the stroke of half time Chris Ellwood's flick on off a corner found Mike Packham at the far post to head home. The second half saw both sides with more determination as the game see-sawed from one end to the other,Stephen Jones replacing Mike Packham,John Greenop moving to centre half alongside Bob Walsh & on the hour Ibis went ahead,Chris Ellwood sending Liam O'Callaghan through, his 50-50 challenge with the keeper allowing the ball to roll free for him to stroke the ball home. This lead was short lived as Kendal equalised 5 minutes later when a corner was cleared to the edge of the area but the ball was knocked back in for Steve Hodgson to knock past the outcoming Andrew Armistead.Kendal again began to push forward, the long ball to Sean Pooley was proving dangerous,Ibis surviving some pressure but emerging unscathed as Ibis began to gain in confidence,Steve Longcake replacing Mark Toal for the final quarter. With 15 minutes to go Stephen Knowles broke from defence to send a superb ball through for Chris Ellwood to slot home.Kendal pushed eveything forward but Ibis held firm running the game out for a superb victory.A good team performance showing a lot of grit especially in the second period,Chris Ellwood once again doing a great job up front,Stuart Gilpin mixing it up in midfield & Bob Walsh commanding at the back in the second half.
24/04/06 Ibis Res 2 Appleby Res 1
Played on a hard bouncy United Utilities pitch Ibis had the strong wind behind them in the first half,Appleby playing a damage limitation game.Neil Hartley & Ryan Ormrod were causing problems for the Appleby defence as Ibis had the lions share of the half taking the lead 10 minutes into the game when Bob Walsh hit an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box giving the keeper no chance.Midway through the half the lead was increased when Gary Bowles turned on a loose ball in the area to score in the bottom corner, more chances followed as Appleby were limited to rare breaks but no more goals as half time arrived.Appleby, with the wind now in their favour, began to come into the game, both teams were still trying to play football but the ball was bobbling around making each team fight for the scraps. With two thirds of the game gone an Appleby corner on the right was miss cleared, the free ball running to a forward to volley home.Ibis were competing well in midfield as Appleby fought for the equaliser but the Ibis defence was solid limiting them to few chances. With 5 minutes to go Steve Longcake appeared to have been brought down in the area, the referee only giving a corner much to his amazement,it was the final incident as Ibis ran out victors.A hard game,Appleby not coming just to make up the numbers but Ibis over all doing enough for the result with the pitch limiting good football.Tom Hayton & Bob Walsh running the midfield,Neil Hartley doing well especially first half,Pete Hetherington & Mike Packham sound at the back.
22/04/06 Sedbergh 1 Ibis 4
Ibis travelled to Sedbergh for this high noon kick off,Ibis Knowing a win would almost surely mean division 1 safety,Sedbergh needing the points even more desperately being second bottom,so a battle royal was predicted & both teams delivered in a game of hard tackling & commitment refereed well by Steve Roberts. There was nothing to split the sides in the first half,Sedbergh taking the lead midway through the half,a free kick from the centre spot was lofted into the Ibis area, the ball glanced on & bouncing painfully into the corner of the net.Ibis recovered & equalised 10 minutes later,a ball over the defence saw Chris Ellwood for once beating the dubious offside trap & chip the ball over the advancing keeper. With the half drawing to a close an Ibis cross was cleared to Stephen Knowles, his 25yard shot striking the base of the post.A competative first half was followed by an even more hard fought second, both teams working hard,Ibis looking the more dangerous with Chris Ellwood leading the line & with 25 minutes to go a run into the box from Stephen Knowles was only partly cleared, the ball running free for Chris Ellwood to slot home.Ibis Knew Sedbergh would not lie down & had to fight hard to keep their lead,Mark Carradus, who had battled hard alongside Chris Ellwood was replaced by Stephen Longcake who gave the Sedbergh defence more problems on the break. As the game drew to a finish Sedbergh frantically pushed for an equaliser,Stuart Gilpin was booked for a hard tackle, but with 3 minutes to go a surging run from James Todhunter was climaxed by a vicious shot into the top corner. With Sedbergh heads down Chris Ellwood rounded off a good performance by taking on the left full back & shooting into the opposite bottom corner for his hat trick.A hard fought win against tough opposition, everyone fighting & working hard, the defence holding tight, midfield strong & trying to play football on a bumpy pitch & the forwards showing for the ball & creating chances,to single out anyone,Mark Toal on his return to the first team filled the left side midfield roll well.
22/04/06 Ibis Res 3 Endmoor 1
Once again the reserves had to scramble a team together,Jamie Mitchell injured,Mark Carradus & Stephen Longcake with the 1st team,Jeremy Skill still on holiday & keeper Chris Miller cricketing forcing Andy Hayton to fill in between the posts.Despite this Ibis began well controlling much of the first half, taking the lead on 25 minutes,a Stuart Dixon free kick finding Neil Hartley at the back post to head home. With 10 minutes to go in the half Ibis increased their lead when Scott O'Callaghan was brought down in the area, with normal penalty taker Jamie Mitchell absent Neil Hartley stepped up to increase the lead. The second period saw Endmoor more in the game & pushing Ibis back getting their reward 10 minutes in when Andy Hayton could only parry a tricky cross away but an Endmoor striker was quickest to react to slot home the loose ball.Endmoor were now pressurising for the equaliser but Ibis were looking dangerous on the break with Scott O'Callaghan & Neil Hartley leading the attack,Pete Clives hitting the post & Neil Hartley the cross bar.In the dying minutes the Endmoor keeper came up for an Endmoor free kick into the Ibis box but the ball was cleared up field by Tom Hayton for Neil Hartley to run through & score for his hat trick.Another good result keeping the reserves on promotion coarse,James Mackreth standing out in the Ibis midfield.
19/04/06 Ibis Res 2 Ambleside Res 1
With Sedbergh closing the gap at the top of division 3 Ibis Reserves new this was an important game to win,Bob Walsh starting,Liam O'Callaghan & John Greenop on the bench,Jamie Mitchell in hospital after suffering a bad calf injury on saturday.Ambleside had strengthened from the first team and the opanning half hour showed they had not come for nothing as Ibis had to work hard to match them. With 25 minutes gone slack defending allowed an Ambleside forward through, his shot deflecting into the net giving Chris Miller no chance.Ibis worked hard & got lucky when Tom Hayton chased a ball to the goalkeeper, the keeper hitting his clearance straight at Tom for him to run in the equaliser. The second half saw Ibis more on top creating but unable to take their chances with Ambleside were still looking dangerous on the break.Liam O'Callaghan John Greenop & Mark Toal were all brought on to try to snatch the winner which eventually came with 5 minutes to go,Neil Hartley finding Liam O'Callaghan free in the box to shoot home.A good all round effort which keeps the reserves well in the promotion race, all working hard for the result,Tom Hayton once again outstanding in centre of the field.
18/04/06 Ibis 2 Appleby 1
Played on millenium field, this first night game for the 1st Xl saw them at full strength, the same line up as the Keswick game plus Graham Carlos,Stephen Jones & Bob Walsh on the bench.Ibis began well & took the game to Appleby creating good chances & deservedly took the lead on 20 minutes,Ryan Ormrod sending Gary Taylor down the line to cross for Chris Ellwood to head into the bottom corner. With Ibis in control a back pass header on the half hour was intercepted by an Appleby forward to slot home the gift which lifted Appleby for the rest of the half as Ibis heads went down slightly. The second half saw the hard working Ibis side battle their way back on top with Appleby still looking dangerous on the break. The three subs were introduced as Ibis sought a winner & with 15 minutes to go Chris Ellwood was brought down in the area,Gary Taylor stepping up but the keeper was quick off the mark to parry the ball out,Mike Packham feeding off the scraps saw his shot canon against the bar.Still Ibis pressed forward & on 85 minutes Stephen Knowles headed on a cross for Chris Ellwood to head home his second & the winner.A hard fought win which we badly needed,we have played well in the last three games & thankfully got a reward for the effort put in,once again everyone contributing,Chris Ellwood tireless up front & Stephen Knowles fighting hard in the middle.
15/04/06 Keswick 3 Ibis 2
Graham Carlos & Stephen Jones were both unavailable for this trip to Keswick, both teams were in need of the points & this showed with the competative nature of the game,Keswick were strong in the tackle & in the air & were launching high balls into the Ibis defence,Ibis digging in & competing well trying to play football on a bumpy pitch. An even first half was split by a single Keswick goal midway through the half,a cross from the left found Ibis guilty of ball watching as a Keswick forward nipped in to slide the ball into the bottom corner.Ibis best chance came to Ryan Ormrod, his shot just outside the far post & with seconds to go in the half Ibis were in luck as a Keswick shot cannoned off the crossbar. The second half saw Ibis playing the better football on the deck & were rewarded on the hour when Stephen Knowles rounded a defender to cross for Liam O'Callaghan to force home from close range. With Ibis looking comfortable disaster struck when a Keswick through ball appeared to have been handled before the ball was slotted home. All protests were in vain & with Ibis unsettled Keswick quickly increased the lead when a Keswick forward was allowed too much room & time in the box to pick his spot & rifle home from close range.Ibis steadily clawed their way back into the game & Ryan Ormrod set up a frantic finish when he chipped the keeper from the edge of the area, alas it was too late as Keswick held out for victory.Another good team effort with no reward, went to sleep on the first & third goals which cost us dear,Stephen Knowles outstanding in the centre of midfield aided by Stuart Gilpin,Andy Davies, despite having a virus was once again solid in defence,Mike Packham,James Todhunter & Chris Ellwood also giving 100%.We need to take confidence into tuesdays game against Appleby where three points is imperative.
15/04/06 Burneside Res 2 Ibis Res 1 A.E.T. Peter Daws Memorial Shield
Ibis started well but gradually Burneside gained control of the first half & deservedly took the lead on 20 minutes,Ibis were then dealt a blow when Jamie Mitchell had to be subbed due to injury as Burneside continued to be on top without creating many chances. The second half saw Ibis come out with more purpose, taking the game to Burneside,Neil Hartley going close on a couple of occasions.Midway through the half a Neil Hartley corner was met by Pete Hetherington, his unstoppable header levelling the scores.Burneside were relying on the breakaway as Ibis pushed for the winner as the game went into extra time with both teams tiring in the heat.Penalties were looming but with the last kick of the game a speculative up & under came out of the sun & dropped in under the bar for a Burneside victory.Stuart Dixon & Pete Hetherington were steady at the back,Tom Hayton,as always, working hard in the middle,Mark Carradus creating problems up front & Scott O'Callaghan had a good game deputising in goals.
08/04/06 Carlton Rovers 2 Ibis 1
A pretty much full strength Ibis travelled to frenchfields Penrith for this important league fixture both teams needing the points to avoid being dragged into the relegation fight.Helped by the good playing surface the first half saw Ibis play some of their best football of the season with good passing & movement against a strong Carlton side. The visitors were creating the batter chances & limiting Carlton to a few isolated efforts & on 20 minutes Ibis deservedly took the lead,a Ryan Ormrod corner was knocked on to the far post by Stuart Gilpin to find Mike Packham for a free header.A good first half but one in which Ibis were to regret not increasing the lead as Carlton came out in the second period much more determined as Ibis were guilty of letting Carlton play in their half.Failure once again to mark oponents properly at corners was to prove costly when from a corner on the left a Carlton player was allowed a free header to equalise.Ibis then got their game together & began to play the better football again but failing to take their chances,Gary Taylor going clear but his shot just scraping wide.Chris Ellwood,Mark Toal & Stephen Jones were brought on as Ibis went in search of the winner but with 5 minutes to go they were dealt a cruel blow,a low cross from the right produced a goalmouth scramble before the ball was bobbled in for Carltons winner.A dissapointing result with nothing to show for good skill & effort with everyone contributing well,James Todhunter dictating things in the midfield holding roll,Mike Packham,Andy Davies & John Greenop steady at the back,Stuart Gilpin & Stephen Knowles winning the midfield battle.
05/04/06 Ambleside Res 1 Ibis Res 3
The first mid week game for the run down of the season saw Ibis Res travel to Ambleside,Bob Walsh filling in for Tom Hayton & Gary Taylor having a run up front,Ambleside themselves looking to have strengthened from above.Ambleside took the game to Ibis for much of the first half but faied to make many chances,Ibis could have taken the lead on 20 minutes when Jamie Mitchell was brought down in the area,Jamie stepping up to take the penalty but it was well saved in the corner. The deadlock was broken 5 minutes later when a Gary Bowles free kick from the right decieved everyone before nestling in the bottom corner. With the half coming to a close Ibis increased their lead,a cross from the left turned in by the quick feet of Gary Taylor. On the balance of play Ambleside would feel agrieved to be two down at half time but 10 minutes into the second half the lead was reduced,a cross fom the left found an unmarked forward whose free header gave Chris Miller no chance. This was a wake up call for Ibis & at last they began to control the game & create chances the lead being increased midway through the half,Gary Taylors shot coming back off the post only to be tee'd up for Bob Walsh to fire home. With the game coming to a close Ibis had the chances to raise the scoreline but failed to put these away as the game ran out with the visitors in control.A good result which keeps the reserves firmly on the promotion trail,Bob Walsh standing out in the centre of midfield.
25/03/06 Ibis Res 6 Braithwaite 2
With no first team game Andy Hayton at last had a full squad to pick from,Chris Ellwood boosting his fitness by playing up front, young Matt Harby starting in midfield,Gary Bowles having his first game for several weeks.Ibis looked the most threatening in the openning period,Matt Harby coming close with a long range shot & soon after the ever reliable Tom Hayton headed a goal kick through for Chris Ellwood to round the keeper for the first goal, this was soon followed by the second,Neil Harley's free kick beating the wall & keeper.Braithwaite were still battling & following slack play in defence the ball was knocked across for a forward to slot home & reduce the lead. The second half producing much of the same,Braithwaite working hard but Ibis looking more likely in front of goals & 10 minutes in the lead was increased,Chris Ellwood taking on the defance on the left to cross for Jamie Mitchell to hammer home from close range. The lead was extended 5 minutes later,Chris Ellwood meeting a right wing corner perfectly to head home.Still Braithwaite would not lie down & as the game became competative in midfield 3 Braithwaite players found themselves in the book, their efforts were rewarded however with 20 minutes to go when a loose ball in the area was put away for their second. With 10 minutes to go Scott O'Callaghan was brought down in the box,Jamie Mitchell stepping up to score the penalty & his second of the game, this was soon followe by the sixth when Neil Hartleys long range shot beat the diving Braithwaite keeper in the bottom corner.A good result which keeps the Reserves on promotion coarse,Braithwaite proving a hard working unit but lacking the fire power of Ibis. All the team having good games,Gary Bowles & Matt Harby working well in midfield,Neil Hartley showing when he's on form he should be moving up team.
18/03/06 Ibis 5 Staveley 1
Chris Ellwood & Stuart Gilpin returned to the 1st team squad for this return fixture, once again played at Staveley.Ibis began brightly, pushing the ball around & forcing Staveley back, eventually forcing the breakthrough after 15 minutes,Gary Taylor picking the ball up on the edge of the box & turning defenders to open the goal for a shot into the corner.Staveley were being limited to breaks,Andrew Armistead being called into action to deal with crosses but the lead was extended on the half-hour,good work from liam O'Callaghan led to a pass to James Todhunter outside the area, his shot on the turn finding the top corner.Half time arrived with Ibis worthy of the two goal lead, but the second half began with Ibis once again thinking they had done enough & eased off, this allowed Staveley back into the game,Stuart Gilpin & Chris Ellwood were introduced but with 20 minutes to go Liam O'Callaghan brought down a Staveley forward in the area & the converted penalty gave Staveley a lifeline. This revitalised Ibis & they got themselves got themselves back on track,Chris Ellwood hitting a good chance straight to the keeper,Stephen Knowles having a free kick blocked by the wall & his follow up shot saved by the keepers feet but moments later a cross from Ryan Ormrod was this time taken by Chris Ellwood, creating room at the back post to shoot into the corner to restore the two goal cushion. With 10 minutes to go Stephen Knowles picked the ball up on the right wing, chipped it over an opposing player & unleashed an awesome shot into the top corner from 35 yards, this was soon followed by the fifth goal,a Graham Carlos free kick knocked in to the front post was met by Stephen Knowles to turn in for his second. In the closing stages Wayne Fisher was brought on to consolidate the result but failed to make an impact.A better performance but we still went to sleep in the middle period of the game which allowed Staveley to come back into it,we must concentrate for the full 90 minutes.Good performances all round especially John Greenop who won a lot of tackles at the back,Stephen Knowles dominating the centre plus a superb goal & Ryan Ormrod who proved when he uses his pace & skill he is a problem to any defence.
11/03/06 Staveley 4 Ibis 5
Stuart Gilpin,Chris Ellwood & Steve Longcake were missing as Ibis struggled to field two teams for todays fixtures,John Greenop stepping up from the reserves at centre half & Wayne Fisher filling in as sub for this away game at Staveley who were one up in the first minute when Andrew Armistead parried a free kick downwards, the Staveley forwards bundling him & the ball into the net.Ibis quickly recovered & 5 minutes later levelled the game when Mike Packhams header looped over the keeper, this was soon followed by a Liam O'Callaghan goal after a good through ball from Stephen Knowles. The game was well in control when on the half hour a mix up by the Staveley defence presented a gift for Gary Taylor who made no mistake in increasing the lead.Ibis then switched off & allowed Staveley back in,with 5 minutes to go in the half sluggish work by the Ibis defence let a Staveley forward shoot into the bottom corner, this was immediately followed by an equaliser when a cross from the left was met at the back post, the volley giving Andrew Armistead no chance & on the stroke of half time Staveley were through again but this time the keeper brought off a superb reflex save.A half in which Ibis were dominant for 30 minutes ended with them flat & out of shape,a slightly over the top rant at half time by Zidane produced a much more positive approach at the start of the second half & Ibis were soon in the lead again,an inspired run through the heart of the Staveley team by Stephen Knowles was stopped by a last gasp tackle,Gary Taylor latching on to the free ball on the edge of the box to strike past the rooted keeper. This inspired spell failed to last however as Staveley competed well, the game was open with chances at both ends,Ibis once again looking vunerable on crosses & with 15 minutes to go failure to clear a cross from the left allowed a Staveley forward to stab home from close range.Ibis then pushed for the winner, good work & pass from Liam O'Callaghan to Ryan Ormrod led to a rash challenge in the box,the referee awarding a penalty which was converted by Graham Carlos.Ibis then had to withstand some nervy moments before the final whistle and a slightly fortunate victory.Liam O'Callaghan caused problems up front & gave 100% all the game, although the squad was weak the team should have won more convincing against a struggling Staveley side, after 3-1 we eased up,stopped doing our jobs & failed to show Staveley any respect,an attitude which nearly cost us dearly. All players should look to & follow the attitude of Andrew Davies who week in,week out gives everything for 90 minutes no matter what the scoreline or opposition,I'd like this to start this saturday for the return game.
11/03/06 Carvetti Res 1 Ibis Res 1
Numerous absentees meant the reserves went to Carvetti with only 11 players plus severe doubts over the fitness of a couple of those, despite this they took the game to Carvetti with Scott O'Callaghan,Jamie Mitchell & Neil Hartley causing the Carvetti defence problems. After 25 minutes Ibis deservedly took the lead when a surging run by Mark Toal was rewarded when he beat the keeper at the second attempt.Carvetti came to life after this but Ibis restricted them to long range shots as the half ended with the away side in front. The openning period of the second half saw Carvetti on top & the pressure eventually told when some indecisive defending allowed a Carvetti striker to fire home into the top corner.Ibis responded to this & began to regain control & as the game openned up the visitors were guilty of missing several chances to win the game as Carvetti were restricted to a few distant shots.Under the circumstances a good result but on the balance of play a game that should have been won.Mark Toal & Jamie Mitchell worked hard & Matt Harby beginning to show good potential.
25/02/06 Ibis 2 Keswick 5
Gary Taylor & Stephen Jones were missing,Chris Ellwood returned & Neil Wilson was on the bench for this home game against Keswick.Ibis began well & took the game to Keswick in the openning 10 minutes but slowly the visitors began to get into the game & after 20 minutes took the lead,Ibis defenders guilty of letting the ball run through to the keeper but a Keswick forward read the move, intercepting the ball & scoring. The lead was soon wiped out when 2 minutes later,Chris Ellwood hitting a long range shot into the top corner & soon after Chris Ellwood saw his point blank shot hit a Keswick defender in the face before landing safely in the keepers hands. With the icey wind against them Ibis looked to keep this score up to half time but with a minute to go Keswick regained the lead, once again failure to clear corners proved costly & after slack marking at the back post the ball was headed back across for a Keswick forward to slot home.Hopes were high that with the wind Ibis could get back into the game in the second half but 5 minutes in the lead was increased,a long range shot was tipped onto the bar by Andrew Armistead,a Keswick forward quickest to react & slot past the grounded keeper, minutes later Mike Packham was at full stretch to clear off the line.Keswick increased their lead on the hour,a high swirling ball caused problems for James Todhunter, the ball running free & chipped over the outcoming keeper.Neil Wilson was introduced at full back,Mike Packham moved into midfield & Liam O'Callaghan pushed up front in a vain attempt to salvage something but Keswick scored again with 20 minutes to go,a short corner was not closed down early enough & the low hard cross was turned in.Ibis then showed more spirit,Mike Packham's short range shot going straight at the keeper & Chris Ellwood forcing a good save in the corner, before a cross from the right struck a Keswick hand & Chris Ellwood slotted the resultant penalty home.It was a small token in what was a dissapponting performance,we never got to grips with the pitch or the physical side of the game, keswick are a strong big hard working side & muscled us out of it but we basically gave away another string of soft goals which we must stop doing,it's no use working hard & creating chances to throw it all away at the back. For me Stephen Knowles,Stuart Gilpin & Andy Davies gave everything,Chris Ellwood tried hard up front with little service,Mike Packham worked hard & Andrew Armistead made 2 or 3 good saves & had little chance with the goals.
25/02/06 Burneside Res 2 Ibis Res 0
Top of the league Ibis Res struggled to field a side for this visit to Burneside,a few players unavailable & the first team taking Jamie Mitchell & Neil Wilson,Andy Hayton was forced to play himself in centre of midfield. In a fairly even first half neither side was able to create any clear chances, this continued into the second half but after 10 minutes Ibis conceded a soft goal when poor marking allowed a Burneside forward a free header past the helpless Chris Miller. This goal gave Burneside more spirit & were more full of running than the visitors who were second best in many areas & with 10 minutes to go a through ball was slotted home to increase the lead,Ibis then created a couple of half chances but not enough to trouble the score sheet.
After the games I talked to a pretty down Andy Hayton,Neil Wake & Tom Haytom,& shared their feelings,we are worried about strength in depth which we need when players are injured or unavailable,we need second team players to be good enough to do a job in the first team & players to come in & do the same for the reserves. We shouldn't have to rely on the same players pulling us through every week, basically when you're playing you are one-eleventh of the team & you should do your share. The concern about training still continues, you can't tell me Keswick & Burneside Res don't train cos both teams were over all fitter than us,our turn out for training is shocking, even Wayne Fisher, who I asked to give a hand at training cos one(or two) were moaning,is getting dispondent basically you're grinding him down aswell.I think the team spirit is effected by training, everyone at training means a good session, work hard & coming off knowing you've done good work & enjoying it,our turn outs range from average(12 or so)to disgraceful(2or3).I always feel sorry for the lads who have turned up only to be let down by the absentees who will almost certainly be their for the kick about on thursday.I talked to Don James,a man who I played nearly all my football for & someone I have the greatest respect & admiration for,his answer,as I new it would be,was if they don't train regularly drop them.We need to put 2 teams out I told him....Then go down to one team, far far better to have one team of players who are keen to work with & for you than the way it is now,if that means you have to go down it's better in the long run.Listen Klondike he said if you hadn't trained I'd have dropped you..DO YOU KNOW,I AGREE!!!
18/02/06 Greystoke 2 Ibis 3
James Todhunter was unavailable & Chris Ellwood failed to show for this important game at Greystoke, after notable performances for the reserves Jamie Mitchell was promoted to the first team squad. It took Ibis 10 minutes to settle down but they then took the game to Greystoke for the rest of the first period,Mike Packham commanding at the centre of the 3 man defence, but the Greystoke goalkeeper was proving hard to beat bringing off good saves from Steve Longcake & twice from Gary Taylor, also surviving a 5 man skirmish on the goal line. After 30 minutes the deadlock was broken when Mike Packham sent a nicely weighted through ball for Steve Longcake to volley into the top of the net, more chances followed but Ibis were unable to increase the lead,Greystoke coming close with a free kick which hit the outside of the post.Ibis came out for the second half thinking the job was done, not so,Greystoke began to take control as Ibis became raggy & lost shape & it was no surprise when Greystoke levelled 10 minutes in,Andrew Armistead unable to hold a shot at the near post the,the ball running free for a tap in.Greystoke, seeing their chance, began to dominate & 5 minutes later a cross from the right was met at the far post by a Greystoke head to put them in the lead.Jamie Mitchell was introduced & liam O'Callaghan pushed forward, good saves from Andrew Armistead & a goal line clearance by Andrew Davies kept Ibis in the match.Ibis began to get their act together & push the home side back in search of an equaliser, which came with 15 minutes to go,a Graham Carlos corner was met perfectly by Stuart Gilpin, his bullet header giving the keeper no chance,5 minutes later the lead was restored when another corner was not cleared ,the ball running free for Steve Longcake to claim his second. With 5 minutes to go Stephen Knowles ran through only to see his shot hit the post,it was the final chance for both sides in a game which should have been won by half time but was finally wrestled from a stubborn Greystoke side. The 3 man defence of Stephen Jones,Mike Packham & Andy Davies(whose goal line clearance kept us in the game)all performed well,Jamie Mitchell did well when introduced & Stuart Gilpin covered all the pitch, the whole team showing good character to come back in the final quarter.Basically we played well for 65 minutes but had a shocking spell after half time when we thought the game was won,it's a lesson we must learn,we must play hard for 90 minutes,no rests & no under estimating the opponents.
18/02/06 Endmoor 1 Ibis Res 2
The reserves marched on in their quest for promotion with this hard fought win at Endmoor but it was the home team who had the better of the first quarter,Ibis finally getting into the game & taking the lead after 25 minutes, good work from Pete Clives & Jeremy Skill allowed Scott O'Callaghan to get free & slot home.Ibis lifted their game after this & had the better of the rest of the half creating a couple of chances but failing to put any away. The second half started where the first left off,Ibis having the better of the exchanges & creating more chances which weren't converted until 15 minutes to go when a half cleared corner was knocked back into the Endmoor box,Pete Hetherington turning to hook the ball into the net from 10 yards.Ibis then began to sit back, this invited Endmoor on as they began to take the game back to the visitors & with 6 minutes to go a goalmouth scramble was prodded home to reduce the lead.Ibis had to work hard at the end but saw the game out for a good win,Scott O'Callaghan in particular catching manager Andy Hayton's eye.
11/02/06 Wetheriggs 3 Ibis 1
The Wetheriggs pitch was in good condition despite the overnight frost which had seen the cancellation of much of the Westmorland League fixtures including Ibis Res game at home to Burneside Res.Ibis had to withstand pressure in the openning minutes as Wetheriggs looked to stamp their authority on the game but the defence held firm & there was no repeat of the previous week,Ibis coming into & having as much play as the home team as the game evened out.In an attempt to stem the recent Ibis woefull defence of corners centre forward Chris Ellwood had been coming back to give height in the air, this appeared to be working untill after 22 minutes a Wetheriggs corner was headed free into the 6 yard box,a Wetheriggs forward quickest to react & jab the ball home.Ibis rallied & began to take the game to the home team, this was rewarded on the half hour when good work from Chris Ellwood set up Ryan Ormrod shoot low & hard into the bottom corner,it was a deserved equaliser,Ibis coming in at the break on level terms.More of the same was required & Ibis continued to match Wetheriggs in all departments in an event filled second half.Five minutes in & the home team were reduced to 10 when a deliberate hand ball was severely punished by a red card,a slightly harsh decision & one which didn't really help Ibis,Wetheriggs now having to work extra hard for a result.More contraversy soon followed,Chris Ellwood rounding a defender to lay back for Steve Longcake to slide home, the Wetheriggs linesman then flagging that the ball had gone out,a decision he later said was borderline & the goalkeeper thought it hadn't.Ibis picked themselves up,Mike Packham,Steve Longcake & Ryan Ormrod having good chances,Andrew Armistead also being called upon to make good saves to deny Wetheriggs the lead, which they finally took with 20 minutes to go,a hard cross from the left was met by a Wetheriggs head to send the ball over the keeper.Ibis tried to recover & created a few half chances but the goal had knocked the stuffing out of them & as the game neared the end,& for the first time in the match,Wetheriggs began to make Ibis chase the ball as the visitors began to tire. With a minute to go the ball ran back to Andrew Armistead who took on a Wetheriggs forward & lost, the player robbing him & walking the ball in,it was a sad end to a great performance, everyone working hard & giving 100%,difficult to pick a player who was above anyone else but it was good to see James Todhunter back on form running the defence as I know he can.
04/02/06 Ibis 2 Wetheriggs 6
Gary Taylor was still unavailable,John Greenop promoted from the reserves for this first of two back to back games with defending league champions Wetheriggs.Once again Ibis found themselves 2 goals down before they had chance to get into the game, the first after 5 minutes when poor defending allowed a forward to turn & shoot into the top corner, the second unluckily coming direct from a corner, the ball hitting the far post & going in.Ibis then recovered from this set back & came more into the game as chances were created at both ends but none taken,Ibis going in at half time feeling they were still in the game. This feeling took a set back when a Wetheriggs third goal just after the break seemed to have killed the game off.Failure to clear a cross was eventually punished, the ball going through a crowd of players into the bottom corner.Ibis, who had shown plenty of fight throughout then got their reward,a Chris Ellwood cross found Graham Carlos with space in the box,his good control was followed by a volley into the top corner. Two minutes later Chris Ellwood's cross come shot looped over the Wetheriggs keeper & Ibis were buzzing,Stephen Knowles heading just wide as Ibis pushed for the equaliser,Ryan Ormrod & John Greenop being introduced. All fell to pieces with 20 minutes to go,once again Ibis were unable to defend a corner, the ball being headed back across & going in off a forwards backside,it was a cruel blow & one Ibis couldn't come back from despite still showing great effort the momentum was lost,Wetheriggs notching two more at the end. This was an improved performance, the scoreline not really doing justice to the effort put in by the Ibis players,Wetheriggs aren't league champions for nothing but periods through the game showed that Ibis could match them,we just need to stop giving soft goals away, this is really hurting us.Full marks to everyone for giving 100%,take confidence that you can get something out of the return fixture on saturday.
04/02/06 Wetheriggs A 0 Ibis Res 1
A weakened Ibis Reserves travelled to Penrith,John Greenop & Steve Longcake were with the 1st team,Tom Hayton was injured,Stuart Dixon dropping down from 1st team.Ibis began well & had the best of the openning 10 minutes after which Wetheriggs began to dominate for the rest of the half as Ibis performance deteriorated, fortunately few chances were created.Andy Hayton read the riot act at half time & this stirred Ibis & they responded with a better display,Pete Clives & Andy Hayton were brought on to stengthen as Ibis created a few half chances. With the game heading for a draw the deadlock was finally broken when a Scott O'Callaghan,Jamie Mitchell combination set Neil Hartley through to shoot into the far corner.Wetheriggs mounted a desperate fightback as Ibis sat back enduring the pressure to hold on.Jamie Mitchell had another steady game & Stuart Dixon played well at sweeper but this was not a vintage display, the team missing Tom Hayton's influence in midfield & Steve Longcake up front.
28/01/06 Ibis 1 Coniston 7
Chris Ellwood,Gary Taylor,James Todhunter & Ryan Ormrod were all missing for this home game against Coniston, who had already beaten Ibis twice this season, scoring four each time,Steve longcake was called up from the reserves & veteran Wayne Fisher was on the bench.Ibis were one down after five minutes, failure to defend corners has been a severe problem all season & once again a Coniston forward was quickest to react when a low front post corner was headed home. The score was doubled 3 minutes later,a throw in from the right was not dealt with & the free ball was prodded into the corner, worse was to come when a left wing cross was headed back to the near post, the Ibis defence were to slow to react & the ball bobbled in off the post.Twenty minutes in & Ibis found themselves four down, slack work on the left allowed a Coniston player to cut the ball back to the edge of the box,a right foot shot nestling in the top corner.Ibis, who had worked hard but given poor goals away, then began to take the game to the visitors,Steve Longcake & Liam O'Callaghan began to trouble the Coniston defence,Steve Longcake was clean through, the diving keeper taking his legs but he stayed up & jabbed the ball wide,a good penalty claim not given.Eventually the Ibis pressure told & Steve Longcake was again put through, this time making no mistake.Hopes of a great comeback were dashed 10 minutes into the second half, another corner was badly defended, the ball sidefooted home from close range. It was an uphill job from their but Ibis continued to fight & created some good chances but Coniston were in control, forcing some good saves from Andrew Armistead before running in a further 2 goals.Wayne Fisher made his first division debut at 41 when he replaced the injured Andy Davies with 10 minutes to go & Liam O'Callaghan saw his header hit the bar in the closing seconds.Coniston are a good hard working side & once again had too much for us,although the scoreline contradicts this,it was a better display than the previous encounters,we did at least create chances & make Coniston work for their win,we just failed to be ruthless in defence & clear the lines.Stuart Gilpin & Andy Davies in defence,Stephen Knowles & Graham Carlos in midfield & Steve Longcake & Liam O'Callaghan up front all gave creditable displays.
28/01/06 Sedbergh Res 1 Ibis Res 0
Ibis Res started the game well & had the better of the exchanges in the first 20 minutes but failed to create any real chances, the match began to even out as Sedbergh game back into the game, the half finishing all square with nothing between the teams. The second period was of similar fashion with nothing to pick between the two sides but midway through the half a Sedbergh forward was quickest to react when a corner to the far post was headed home. The game at last began to open up & chances were created at both ends,as the final whistle drew closer a combination of good keeping & good defending kept the Sedbergh goal in tact.A scrappy game which could have gone either way,Ibis probably were missing Steve Longcake up front but good games from John Greenop,Jeremy Skill & Neil Hartley,& another accomplished performance from Chris Miller in the Ibis goals.
14/01/06 Ibis 3 Windermere 4
The United Utilities field??was the setting for the visit of Windermere,Ibis squad was at full strength,Mike Packham was moved to centre half,Stuart Dixon on the right,Liam O'Callaghan on the left,Chris Ellwood returning up front to partner Gary Taylor.Windermere began the stronger, pushing the Ibis defence back but not creating any clear chances but on 20 minutes a hopeful long high ball was spilled by Andrew Armistead,a Windermere forward quickest to react to tuck the loose ball home.Ibis slowly got a foothold in the game & on the half hour following a good save from the Windermere keeper the ball fell to Gary Taylor who typically twisted the defenders before lashing home.Five minutes later good challenging from Liam O'Callaghan saw the ball fed through for Gary Taylor again who beat defender & keeper for number 2.A Half time lead was unjust on Windermere but gave Ibis the stepping board to carry on & win the game, this failed to happen in an incident filled second period which saw Windermere trying to get level, playing good football on a very difficult rutty pitch, whilst Ibis looked dangerous on the break. With 25 minutes to go a left wing cross was headed in under pressure & 2 minutes later a cross from the right produced exactly the same result to put the visitors in the lead. The visitors looked to have finished the game when a penalty was awarded when a Windermere forward went down in the area,Ibis players & spectators were bemused by the decision but the ball was slotted home.Gary Bowles,Ryan Ormrod & Graham Carlos(returning from injury)were introduced as the referee made up for his earlier penalty decision by awarding Ibis one when Gary Taylor was adjudged to have been fouled, another ropey decision but Gary Taylor stepped up to score his hat trick. At last Ibis showed some desire & pushed Windermere back in search of an equaliser,Ryan Ormrod was making a difference & when he had his legs taken away in the area for what looked a certain penalty the referee put his whistle to his mouth & then waved play on,this produced more arguement & bookings but the final Ibis push failed to produce a goal as Windermere held firm. All in all a fair result, Ibis didn't do enough to warrant any points, although a better performance than last week, more improvement on basic skills & desire is still needed.Andy Davies,Stephen Knowles & Stuart Gilpin all worked hard but Gary Taylor stood out for his goals,we need to play to each others strengths, when you give Gary the ball in the box he's magic.
14/01/06 Braithwaite 0 Ibis Res 5
Ibis Res took their promotion hopes to Braithwaite, new goalkeeper Chris Miller making his debut & producing an encouraging faultless performance,Mark Toal also in the squad after a long injury.the game began evenly but after 10 minutes a Tom Hayton through ball released Steve Longcake to round the keeper for the openner, this was quickly followed by Ibis second when fancy footwork & good cross from Neil Hartley was back-headed into the top corner by Steve longcake for his second. On 20 minutes Steve Longcake was in the thick of it again when he was fouled in the area,Jamie Mitchell wrestling the ball from him to take the penalty which was saved by the keeper but the ball kindly came back to Jamie who slotted the rebound home.Braithwaite were playing some nice football but lacked penetration as Ibis commanded the rest of the half. The second period started in similar fashion,Mark Toal being introduced as Ibis increased their lead when Jamie Mitchell put Neil Hartley through to lob the keeper.Scott O'Callaghan then got on the score sheet when a Neil Hartley through ball was hit first time past the keeper & in the final second a John Greenop shot was adjudged to have crossed the line after the final whistle.A strong all round effort from Ibis,Jamie Mitchell & Neil Wilson taking the accolades for good performances.
07/01/06 Ibis 0 v Coniston 4 (High Sheriffs Cup Rd1)
After a 5 week lay off due to weather & Christmas both Ibis teams were back in "action" for their first games of 2006.The millenium field was adjudged the better pitch(despite the numerous amounts of dog dirt),Graham Carlos(still struggling with a knee injury)was missing,Chris Ellwood & Stuart Dixon were on the bench. The openning 15 minutes saw the Ibis goal lead a charmed life as a very good & fit Coniston side continually attacked, only the crossbar twice, excellent saves from Andrew Armistead & frantic defending kept the ball out,but on 20 minutes the deadlock was broken when a Coniston through ball was slotted into the bottom corner.Ibis then had their best spell of the game & for 15 minutes matched & pressed Coniston without creating any chances, the visitors beginning to regain control as the half drew to a close. The second period saw Coniston once again on top,Ibis failing to mount any challenges on their goal but holding firm in defence, once again the crossbar & Andrew Armistead coming to their rescue.Chris Ellwood & Stuart Dixon were introduced & the team rearranged to try to get some support up front but with 20 minutes to go a Coniston corner was punched into his own net by Andrew Armistead,it was his only mistake in an otherwise great game.A further two goals were ran in as a few Ibis heads dropped,Coniston on the other hand were full of running, closing any Ibis moves down right up to the final whistle. It was a well deserved defeat & a rude awakening, all players must now realise that saying we are a good team is one thing, going on the park & proving it is quite another.Training tuesday!!!.
07/01/06 Appleby Res 0 Ibis Res 3
Ibis Reserves continued their challenge for promotion with this 3-0 victory at Appleby, but the win was not as convincing as the scoreline shows.Andy Hayton was forced to play himself in goals,Shane Sephton once again pulling out at the last minute,& it was Andy who was the busier of the 2 keepers, making some good saves in the openning 30 minutes.Against the run of play Ibis openned the scoring when a Steve Longcake cross was hammered in by Jamie Mitchell & 5 minutes later a dubious challenge on Steve Longcake was adjudged a penalty,Jamie Mitchell stepping up to score his second. The second half saw Ibis more in control, defending solidly & restricting Appleby to long range shots,Scott O'Callaghan & Matt Harby being introduced. With 10 minutes to go,following good work by Mark Carradus & Steve Longcake the ball was slipped through for Scott O'Callaghan to tuck away the third to seal the victory.Good performances by Tom Hayton & John Greenop & man of the match James Mackereth was an unbreachable tower in defence
03/12/05 Windermere 2 Ibis 3
Stephen Jones & Ryan Ormrod were unavailable from last weeks team,Graham Carlos,Gary Taylor & Dan Wilkinson also still missing,Gary Bowles & Stuart Dixon returning,Andrew Armistead still standing in as keeper,Pete Heatherington stepping up as centre half & veteran Wayne Fisher on the bench for Ibis visit to Windermere. The openning phase saw Windermere making the most of home advantage but Ibis held firm & took the lead on 10 minutes,a well judged through ball from Gary Bowles left Chris Ellwood to round the keeper.Ibis were dealt a blow 5 minutes later when sweeper James todhunter tore a hamstring but with him still on the field a weak clearance was knocked back into the box & with Ibis defence at sixes & sevens a Windermere forward turned & found the bottom corner for the equaliser.Stuart Dixon immediately came on at sweeper as the game began to even out,Ibis were looking more likely on the break & on 25 minutes Andy Davies sent Liam O'Callaghan down the line to cut in,his shot rebounded off the keeper but he followed up to regain the lead, which Ibis could have increased 5 minutes later when a Stephen Knowles shot canonned off the crossbar,Liam O'Callaghan's overhead follow up going straight to the keeper. With the half drawing to a close slack marking at a Windermere corner left a player free at the back post to head in for the equaliser. With a few players carrying injuries Ibis new they were in for a hard 2nd half, this proved to be the case but 10 minutes in Ibis got a break,a through ball was flagged by the linesman but the referee ignored it,a Windermere player, thinking offside had been given, caught the ball whilst in the area,a penalty was given & Chris Ellwood stepped up to restore the lead.Windermere were fighting hard for the equaliser,Andrew Armistead holding firm with a string of good saves to deny them, but Ibis were still dangerous on the break the keeper thwarting Chris Ellwood & Neil Hartley when both were bearing down on goal.At the final whistle it was 3 points hard earned,Windermere a shade unlucky to get nothing in a well fought contest but Ibis grit & determination won the day, everyone,as last week, performing well,Andy Davies & Chris Ellwood(despite carrying injuries)worked hard & Stuart Gilpin & Mike Packham made every tackle count.Wayne Fisher, although not needed gave great moral support from the touch line.
03/12/05 Carvetti Res 1 Ibis Res 2 (Peter Dawes trophy)
With the 1st team taking players Andy Hayton was forced to start himself,Shane Sephton returned in goals as Ibis Res travelled to Kirby Stephen for this cup match.Carvetti began the brighter & dominated the first quarter but failed to create any chances & as the half wore on Ibis began to get back into the game, the best chance falling to Neil Wilson but the ball was cleared off the line.Carvetti took the lead straight after half time when poor defending & a miss kick allowed a Carvetti forward to strike home. This was a wake up call for Ibis & at last they began to dominate the game & after 25 minutes an Ibis corner was met by Stephen Longcake, his bullet header giving the keeper no chance. With 10 minutes to go Ibis took the lead when Pete Clives put Steve Longcake through to beat the off side trap & slip the ball under the keeper for his second, moments later he was through again for his hat trick but his shot hit the side netting.Ibis ran out the game comfortably in the end,Steve Longcake causing problems up front,Jeremy Skill tackling well in midfield & Andy Hayton a rock in defence(quote..Matt Harby).A good result showing the strength of the squads.
26/11/05 Ibis 3 Sedbergh 3
Gary Taylor & Gary Bowles, unavailable,Dan Wilkinson,Graham Carlos & Stuart Dixon, all injured, were missing for this 1st team game v Sedbergh on millenium field,Andrew Armistead stepping in as keeper,Neil Hartley up front & Andy Hayton on the bench, the 2nd team having no fixture.Ibis were rocked back after 4 minutes when a 30 yard strike flew over Andrew Armistead, his first touch picking it out of the net.Settling into the game after this Ibis deservedly equalised on 20 minutes,Stuart Gilpin's low hard shot was only parried,Mike Packham on hand to lash the ball home.Ibis could have taken the lead 5 minutes later,Mike Packham's back post header going over but a fairly even 1st half finished all square,Ibis feeling the game was for the taking. The second half saw Ibis on top,the defence looking solid, excellent passing, movement & tackling from the midfield,Chris Ellwood & Neil Hartley working hard closing the Sedbergh defence down & deservedly took the lead on the hour,Steve Knowles making room outside the box,his low shot beating the keeper.More chances were created,Chris Ellwood heading wide & Liam O'Callaghan's volley bringing a tremendous save from the Sedbergh keeper but with 20 minutes to go & against the run of play,a weak defensive clearance was picked up & crossed for a Sedbergh forward to shoot home.Ibis then began to lose a bit of shape as Sedbergh came back into the game which began to open up,Ibis defence coming under pressure for the first sustained time in the match & with 10 minutes to go the problems of defending crosses was shown up again when a Sedbergh corner ran loose in the box & was jabbed home for the third.Andy Hayton was brought on,Mike Packham moving into midfield & Liam O'Callaghan up front as Ibis pushed for the equaliser which they thought they had when Andy Davies's shot beat the keeper but scraped over the bar.Sedbergh were defending well & looking dangerous on the break,James Todhunter putting in late tackles to deny them,Ibis were battling desperately for the equaliser,Ryan Ormrod, having a good second half was putting good crosses in but no connection being made.As injury time started Stephen Knowles was brought down outside the area,Liam O'Callaghan stepping up to float the ball into the top corner for a deserved share of the points.A really good team effort, possibly should have taken all 3 points,Stephen Knowles giving a great centre midfield display & Andy Davies excellent tackling & work rate but everyone contributing well
19/11/05 Grasmere 2 Ibis Res 3
Plenty of grass & no ruts on the Grasmere pitch meant this fixture survived the frosty weather which had cancelled much of the Westmorland league fixtures including the 1st team match at home to Keswick.Ibis got into the game from the start creating & not taking chances but got the break they needed when Jamie Mitchell's soft shot was fumbled into the net by the Grasmere keeper after 15 minutes. The team lost momentum after this & a wake up call was needed & given on the half hour, when,on a rare attack,a long range shot hit the top corner for the equaliser. This spurred Ibis into action,Tom Hayton,Pete Clives,Matt Harby & Mark Carradus dominating midfield,Neil Hartley & Steve Longcake pressurising up front & with 10 minutes of the half left Steve Longcake robbed a Grasmere defender to set up Mark Carradus to shoot home to restore the lead. Two minutes later the ball ran free to Steve Longcake who turned & calmly chip the keeper for the third.More domination followed in the second half but Ibis were guilty of squandering chance after chance to seal the game, subs Sean & Scott O'Callaghan & Neil Wilson were introduced but still the chances went begging.Grasmere on the other hand began to gain confidence on the break, forcing Andrew Armistead into 2 good saves but with 5 minutes to go an unmarked Grasmere forward volleyed home to reduce the lead. The game openned up but still Ibis created & missed good opportunities to finish the game & in injury time a Grasmere corner was only half cleared, the resulting shot was pushed onto the post & out for a corner by Andrew Armistead to save Ibis blushes.Ibis should never have been put in such a predicament against a very ordinary Grasmere side, basically the team played well but we missed at least a dozen good goalscoring chances, other teams may not be so generous.
12/11/05 Ibis 5 Carlton Rovers 0
Heavy mud in the centre of the United Utilities field made it very debatable if this game should have gone ahead,Ibis were back to full strength,Stuart Gilpin dropping back to centre half,Mike Packham moving up to left midfield & liam O'Callaghan switching to striker. The openning 10 minutes saw Carlton on top, only the post, good saving & desperate blocking keeping Ibis from going behind.Gradually Ibis began to work themselves back into the game & from a Stuart Gilpin long throw the ball was jabbed home by Chris Ellwood for the opener.Carlton were still strong in the heavy conditions & were causing problems with high balls into the box especially from corners & long throws but on the half hour Ibis doubled their lead when Mike Packham latched on to a right wing pass to chip the ball over the stretching keeper into the top corner from 25 yards.Dan Wilkinson was still busy in the Ibis goal bringing off a good save in the bottom corner, unfortunately jarring his shoulder in the process & though he tried to carry on had to be replaced,Chris Ellwood kindly stepping in & Gary Taylor coming on up front. At the half time talk Graham Carlos asked for a quick goal & almost straight from the start Gary Taylor weaved round the Carlton defence & crossed for Ryan Ormrod to slot home, this was followed 5 minutes later when the ball was pushed through for Gary taylor to round the keeper for number four. The game was end to end with Carlton powering through the mud while Ibis played good pass & move football which was a credit to them in the heavy conditions, chances followed at both ends Chris Ellwood doing well on several occasions but Ibis finished the game off with 5 minutes to go when Gary Taylor again taunted the Carlton defence again before crossing for Gary Bowles to tap in.All in all a good hard fought game,Carlton unlucky to lose by the scoreline but Ibis showed great resolve, commitment & spirit which we need to carry forward in the coming games, everyone playing well but I'd like to pick out liam O'Callaghan who worked tirelessly & bravely all afternoon causing problems to a strong physical defence.
05/11/2005 Kendal Town 4 Ibis 1(Benevolent Cup)
James Todhunter & Gary Taylor were missing for this Cup match on Parkside,Andy Davies returned to the squad on this dull rainy Autumn afternoon.Ibis began brightly & matched Kendal for much of the first half but were unable to create any chances,Chris Ellwood working hard but once again the forwards were either left isolated or we failed to get crosses into the danger area,Kendal however were keeping Dan Wilkinson busy & 5 minutes before the break a back post cross was headed back across goal for a tap in.Confident that they had matched Kendal for play,if not chances,Ibis took the field for the second half but bonfire night produced no fireworks as Town doubled their lead when a far post cross was unfortunately turned into his own goal by Stephen Knowles.Kendal were now dominating the game but at last Ibis created a couple of chances,Chris Ellwood's shot just going over & a maizy run by Stuart Dixon ending with his shot hitting the post.Andy Davies was introduced but on the hour the lead was increased when a right wing cross deceived Dan Wilkinson & looped into the far corner.Liam O'Callaghan, celebrating his 21st birthday, got Ibis on the score sheet when his 25 yard shot went in off the crossbar, but the goal was short lived as Kendal sealed the game with a good curling shot into the top corner.Stephen Knowles was pick of the bunch but once again against Kendal Town we have matched them in the first half but faded badly in the second, this can only be down to fitness & desire,PLEASE come training.
05/11/2005
Ibis Res 2 Carvetti Res 2
Heavy rain before & during this game made conditions farcical twowards the end of this game, played on United utilities field.Carvetti began stronger & took the lead after 10 minutes. This was a wake up call & Ibis began to get their game together equalising with a Neil Hartley shot & then taking the lead wheb Neil Wilson's cross was fumbled into the net by the Carvetti keeper. The second period saw Ibis well in control but not able to seal the game despite creating good chances,Neil Hartley twisting his knee in the muddy conditions being replaced by young Matt Harby but with 5minutes to go a Carvetti shot was well saved by Andrew Armistead but the rebound was followed up for the equaliser.Tom Hayton standing out again in the centre of midfield, but probably the conditions cost Ibis all three points.
29/10/05 Ibis 4 Lunesdale Utd 2
Andy Davies was the only absentee from the 1st team squad following last weeks drubbing at Kendal County. Both teams were out of the blocks early,Dan Wilkinson being forced into a good diving save,Lunesdale clearing off the line & mike Packham stabbing wide & then hitting the post from a Chris Ellwood cross.Ryan Ormrod was putting in some good corners & from one of these Chris Ellwood made great contact, heading past the keeper to give Ibis the lead.Ibis were playing some good pass & move football & looking to increase the lead but from a corner clearance the ball was knocked back into the goalmouth & flicked into the net for the equaliser.Ibis continued to push forward creating chances & just before the interval Mike Packham was rewarded when he headed in a right wing cross. The start of the 2nd half saw Ibis looking to finish the game off,Gary Taylor & liam O'Callaghan were introduced but following a clearance the ball ran loose to a Lunesdale forward who ran through & slotted home.Ibis picked themselves up & forced a series of chances eventually taking one when Liam O'Callaghan latched on to a left wing cross.Lunesdale were always dangerous & Dan Wilkinson was forced into 2 good close range saves before Gary Taylor tapped in at the back post to seal the game.A much needed & deserved win, passing, movement & desire was greatly improved showing that we can do it,everyone contributing as a team effort, difficult to highlight anyone above the others but Ryan Ormrod showed what he's capable of when given service.
29/10/05 Penrith Rangers Res 1 Ibis Res 5
The high flying Reserves kept up there great start to the season with this comfortable win on French Fields,Penrith. After an even first 10 minutes Ibis took control with 3 quick goals,Neil Wilson opening the scoring, slotting home from a corner at the back post, minutes later Neil Hartleys cross flashed across the box for Steve Longcake to side foot in.Neil Hartley again turning provider when his through ball was taken round the keeper & in by Bob Walsh. After dominating the first half, the second period saw a spell of Penrith pressure as they tried to get back into the game, this was halted when Neil Wilson met a cross to volley home for his second.Five minutes later another through ball from Neil Hartley put Steve Longcake in to slot home for his second of the game. With the game won Penrith got on the score sheet with a goal in the the dying minutes.Andy Hayton, praising everyone, was unable to pick anyone above another but proud of all.
22/10/05 Ibis 1 Kendal County 8
Ibis played this re-arranged home fixture on Kendal County's ground but this was no excuse for the final scoreline,Stephen Knowles & Gary Taylor returned so Ibis were (possibly) at full strength.County were ahead inside 2 minutes,a run & cut back from the left was met by an unstopable shot into the top corner, this was cancelled out 3 minutes later when Liam o'Callaghan fed Gary Taylor who layed the ball to Graham Carlos, his long range shot finding the bottom corner. The half then settled down,County pushing to gain the upper hand but Ibis holding firm,Dan Wilkinson tipping a goal bound shot over & last gasp tackles from Andrew Davies & James Todhunter, keeping County out whilst Chris Ellwood & Gary Taylor were looking dangerous on the break.County were looking dangerous at corners & just before the interval a back-post corner was headed in to regain the lead.Still in the game, the first minute of the second half brought a point blank save by Nicky Dent off a Stuart Gilpin header,it was a crucial save as from then on County took control. On 55 minutes another County corner was headed in & 5 minutes later the ball was prodded in after a goalmouth scramble.Ryan Ormrod,Gary Bowles & Stuart Dixon were introduced, but Ibis were in dissaray,a few heads going down while County saw the chance to revenge their early season defeat.A shot from outside the box made it five, this followed by two goals from close range. With a minute to go a County forward was put through for number 8.Dan Wilkinson kept well & was not at fault for any of the goals,Andy Davies had a good game at full back,Chris Ellwood & Gary Taylor worked hard but are ploughing a lone furrow up front.Basically it's ROCK BOTTOM TIME,it will take a great effort to recover from this but I still believe we have the players to do it,the question is DO YOU WANT TO???hope so,see you at training
22/10/05 Ibis Res 1 Wetheriggs Res 2 (a.e.t)
With the rugby playing on millenium field,Ibis Res were on the United Utilities pitch for this junior Cup 1st round tie against Wetheriggs Res from a division higher.Ibis began well & shaded the first half, chances being created at both ends but none taken. The second half saw Wetheriggs come on stronger but Ibis held firm,Pete Hetherington & Andrew Armistead(playing at sweeper) proving difficult to beat.No goals at full time but 5 minutes into the extra period wetheriggs broke the deadlock with a well taken goal Shane Sephton given no chance.Ibis responded well from this & with 10 minutes to go Mark Carradus(home from University)equalised with a well taken free kick. With penalties looming Wetheriggs snatched the win with a last gasp winner.Another very creditable effort from the reserves, not looking a league down from their oponents, young players Scott O'Callaghan & Neil Wilson performing well.
15/10/05 Coniston 4 Ibis 1
Stephen Knowles & Gary Taylor were the main absentees for the first, but with still a lot of players missing Ibis struggled to put two sides out, untried Pete Moseley coming as reserve for the 1st X1,Chris Ellwood & a worse-for-wear Mike Packham returned,Jamie Mitchell making his first start.Ibis held there own in the opening 20 minutes without creating much but from a weak clearance the ball was hit first time, curling into the top corner to put coniston one up.Five minutes later a Coniston corner was well met on the edge of the box,the bullet header proving unstoppable.Slack marking from a throw-in allowed Coniston to break down the right, cutting in, the ball was layed off to a free Coniston forward, his misskicked shot deceiving Dan Wilkinson in the Ibis goal.Ibis were thrown a life line at the end of the half when following good work from Liam O'Callaghan on the right the ball was pushed through to Gary Bowles who slipped it through for Chris Ellwood to slot home,it was Ibis best move of the game.Similar in the second half,Ibis were by no means being outplayed, but creating chances was proving dificult,Coniston however looked more dangerous up front & midway through the half bad marking & concentration let free a Coniston forward to seal the game.Pete Moseley came on for the last quarter & worked hard,Liam O'Callaghan was pushed forward & caused problems, but the game was already lost.James Todhunter sweeping,Stuart Gilpin midfield & Chris Ellwood, who worked tirelessly up front for 90 minutes, were the pick of the team.We didn't play badly I just think we lack a bit of conviction, confidence & the belief that we are as good as the oposition & can beat them.Above all we must concentrate more & stop giving stupid goals away, three Coniston goals were a result of not doing the basic things.Training??????????
15/10/05 Ibis Res 2 Carleton R Res 2
With several regulars missing the 2nd team was bolstered up with the addition of Dave Wilson(a young 42),Pete Clives & Sean O'Callaghan,1st teamer Stephen Knowles arriving for the 2nd half after selling some tupps or something.Ibis started slowly allowing Carleton the majority of posession & after 20 minutes, following a co
